Caskets
A casket burial is a traditional type of burial with many options.
A casket is a specially designed box used to hold the remains of the deceased. It is a rectangular shaped container with four sides and a lid on hinges. Rails that are used as handles when moving the casket are placed along each side of the casket. Caskets can be used for both burials and cremations depending upon the type.
Caskets are commonly distinguished and categorized by the material used to construct them. The two groups being metal and wooden caskets. Within each group, different types of that material may be used such as stainless steel, oak or mahogany. Caskets are lined with a cloth interior to create a soft and relaxing place for the deceased to rest
We supply caskets in a variety of styles and finishes, but we have provided a brief description of some of the caskets available for your selection.

FUNERAL PLANNING F.A.Q.
The death of a loved one can leave one feeling confused, alone, and unsure of what to do or where to turn. A funeral, memorial service or thanksgiving offers family and friends the opportunity to say goodbye to a loved one and clear the way for the healing process.
At Oakley’s Funeral Services, our experienced team of professionals is ready to answer your questions and offer advice during this difficult time. Here are some of the most common questions families ask and the answers we provide to grieving family members as they walk alongside us.
If death occurs at home: immediately upon discovery, notify the police. The police will then have a brief conversation with the family members to determine if the remains can be released to the funeral home of the family’s choice or if they should be sent to the government contracted funeral home.
Note: If the deceased had a known medical condition and was receiving medical treatment within three months prior to death and the police have no interest in the death, a “No Interest Letter” MUST will be issued by the police within 48 hours. This letter should then be taken to the medical facility where the deceased was treated and a medical certificate will be issued allowing the burial of the remains by the doctor who treated the deceased. (Popularly known as “PINK SLIP”).
An authorized representative of the nursing facility, whether the hospital or nursing home, notifies the family or next of kin and the proper authorities immediately when death has occurred. At this point, the family, next of kin or legal representative should contact the funeral home of their choice “Oakley’s Funeral Services” after receiving this information from the nursing facility. On arrival of the funeral director, a brief discussion will be held and the family or next of kin will be advised thereafter.
The Registration (Births and Deaths) Act of Jamaica demands all deaths to be registered within five days. The Register General’s Department (RGD) is required to register all deaths.
By law, a death must be registered in the district where it occurred.
The death certificate is one of the most important legal documents issued by the government. A death certificate can only be obtained after the death has been registered. A death certificate is required:
- As legal proof of death.
- To settle the estate
- To claim benefits such as pension and insurance.
- To serve as proof of dissolution of marriage if you wish to remarry.
The book of Medical Certificate cause of death (MCCD) is provided by the RGD to all Medical Practitioners who need it. The books are pre-numbered and allow the Medical Practitioner to keep the stub after giving the family member the Medical Certificate of cause of death. Once the book is filled out, the RGD collects the stubs.
There are three types of deaths. Natural, Sudden and Violent Death:
- Natural deaths are those where a doctor has visited the deceased regularly within three months and there is no reasonable doubt about the cause of death.
- Sudden deaths are those where the deceased has not been under a doctor’s care for the previous three months and/or the cause of death is suspected to be the fault of another person.
- Violent deaths are those that occurred under violent circumstances, such as stabbing, shooting or suicide.
